Yellow spotted salamander

IMG_2700.JPG

Whilst out snowshoeing we came across a very strang site. There was a lizard laying, motionless on the ice.

At first I assumed it was dead but as we got close, it moved slightly but very slowly. I assume it was it's cold bloodiness that caused this.

We didn't know what to do so we looked around and I saw a tree root. My partner picked it up and placed it in the root, it started to move and crawled inside.

We probably saved it's life.

Wondering what it was, I did some research and it seems that it is a yellow spotted salamander. It was about 25cm long and from the little research I did, I think it emerged for mating as it has been warm the last few days. Sadly for the lizard, the snow is still very much there.
